Great Questions to Ask in an Interview

You’ve sailed through the interview, you’ve answered all the Hiring Managers questions, you’ve showcased your experience, qualifications and qualities, everything matches up with the job description…. the Hiring Manager now asks you that dreaded question….”Have you got any questions for me?”

What next?

Why ask questions during an interview?

Interviews are not just about the hiring manager discovering if you are the right fit for the company, its also a great opportunity for you to discover more about the work culture of the business and if it is the right fit for you! Its really important that you ask the right questions of your own to determine this but ones that give you a chance to showcase more of your qualities, relevant experience and qualifications.  Posing questions to a hiring manager also shows you have done your due diligence and your level of enthusiasm for the role.

Research is a must!

Get ahead of the game and prepare to impress with your carefully crafted questions.

How many questions should I prepare?

You will need at least 4 to 5 prepared questions just in case a few of your questions have already been answered within the interview

Avoid asking questions that revolve around what the organisation can do for you and avoid questions that have already been covered after all you don’t want the interviewer to think you haven’t been listening!

We’ve selected a few questions that the team of experienced Consultants at Xpert Resourcing, an Independant, Ely based Recruitment Agency share with candidates:

What would an average day in this role look like?

You are trying to learn as much as possible about this role and this question can give you any further insights you will need. It also allows the hiring manager to express their expectations of the role so there are no surprises

What are the main strengths of the business?

The answer to this question will give you a good insight into any potential business growth, the businesses place in the market and job security. This questions show to the potential employer your commitment and real interest in the business.

What are the challenges facing a person in this role?

This could get you some vital information about the role you would not read in the job description! This could be office politics or budget restrictions but can give you the chance to describe how you have successfully navigated similar issues in previous roles that could be genuinely useful for the potential employers.

What are your aspirations for the role within the next 3 or 6 months?

The pace of the role and/or the business should be indicated within the answer to this question for example if you are expected to majorly achieve within the first 3 months you would be aware of how much time is expected to ramp up, if you have lots of experience then its a win-win situation! The interviewer could reveal some upcoming projects within their answer that you may have been otherwise unaware of.

Ask a question that really matters to you!

You want to impress the interviewer which is really understandable but showing your personality is never a bad thing, the interview is a 2 way street so think about what is going to really matter to you in a role. Is that culture, working hours, or expectations? Form a question that matters to how you will thrive in a new job.

What are the next steps in the process?

Finishing with this questions shows you enthusiasm and makes it easier to gauge a timeline so if at any point you want to check in with the employer you have a reference point. They may share with you their desire for an additional interview or even preparation of a task.

Your dedicated Consultant at Xpert Resourcing will guide you through the whole process. We encourage preparation before an interview and can arrange as much assistance with this as you would like.
