The Valentine’s Quick Guide to Job Interviews

What first dates and job interviews have in common

Valentine’s Day is all about first impressions, good conversations and finding the right match. In many ways, job interviews aren’t so different from first dates.

You’re meeting someone new, putting your best foot forward and trying to decide if the relationship has long-term potential. With that in mind, here’s our light-hearted but practical Valentine’s Quick Guide to Interviews.

1. Dress to impress

You don’t need to turn up in a tuxedo or evening gown, but making an effort matters. Choose something smart, comfortable and appropriate for the role and company culture.

First impressions are formed quickly, and how you present yourself plays a part in that.

2. Be on time (or early)

Turning up late to a first date rarely goes down well, and the same applies to interviews.

Aim to arrive:

  • 10–15 minutes early for in-person interviews
  • 5 minutes early for virtual interviews

This shows respect for the interviewer’s time and helps you feel more relaxed before you start.

3. Do a little background research

Before a date, most people will at least look up the restaurant. Before an interview, you should definitely research the company.

Make sure you know:

  • What the company does
  • Their main products or services
  • Their values or culture
  • Why the role interests you

It shows genuine interest and helps you ask better questions.

4. It’s a conversation, not an interrogation

A good date isn’t one person talking the whole time, and neither is a good interview.

Be prepared to:

  • Talk about your experience
  • Give examples of your achievements
  • Ask questions about the role and company to see if this is the long term partner you are looking for!

Remember, the interview is for you too. You’re deciding if this is the right fit.

5. Be honest about what you’re looking for

In both dating and job hunting, honesty saves time.

Be clear about:

  • The type of role you want
  • Your salary expectations
  • Your working preferences (e.g. hybrid, hours, progression)

This helps avoid mismatches later on.

6. Mind your manners

Simple things make a big difference:

  • Greet people politely
  • Listen carefully
  • Avoid interrupting
  • Stay positive when talking about previous roles

Professionalism and courtesy always leave a good impression.

7. Follow up afterwards

After a good date, a quick message is polite. After an interview, it can be just as effective.

A short follow-up email or call:

  • Thanks the interviewer for their time
  • Reconfirms your interest in the role
  • Keeps you fresh in their mind

It doesn’t need to be long – just genuine. And if the role is through an agency (your professional matchmaker), just give them a call afterwards and they’ll pass your feedback on for you.

The perfect match takes two

Just like dating, not every interview will lead to “the one.” And that’s okay.

The goal isn’t just to get a job – it’s to find the right job with the right company, culture and opportunities for you.
