Naughty or Nice CV Checklist: Is Your CV Ready for the Christmas Hiring Rush?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to make sure your CV is working as hard as you are! As job seekers get ready for the New Year career boost, employers are checking their lists (twice!) – and so are we at Xpert Resourcing.

To help you shine brighter than the star on top of the tree, we’ve put together a festive Naughty vs. Nice CV Checklist. Make sure you’re on the nice list this year!

The NICE List — CV Practices That Will Get You Hired

 Clear, concise formatting

A tidy, easy-to-read CV is like a beautifully wrapped gift—inviting and enticing.

A strong personal statement

Share who you are, what you bring, and what you’re looking for. Short, confident, and tailored.

Keywords aligned to the job description

Santa might have magic, but recruiters use search tools. Use relevant skills and industry terms so you can be found.

Achievements over duties

Employers want proof you can deliver. Use numbers and outcomes to show impact:
“Increased sales by 20%”, “Reduced costs by £10k”, “Improved process efficiency”.

Consistent formatting and grammar

Headings aligned, bullet points matching, tenses consistent. Clean and polished = professional.

 Tailored for each application

One CV doesn’t fit all. Adjust your profile and skills to match each role – trust us, it works like magic.

Up-to-date contact details

Because Santa isn’t the only one who needs to reach you quickly.

The NAUGHTY List — CV Mistakes to Avoid

Typos and spelling mistakes

Nothing lands you on the naughty list quicker. Spellcheck, proofread, and proofread again.

Too long (or too short!)

Keep it to 1–2 pages. Enough detail to show your value – with no extra stuffing.

Unprofessional email addresses

If your email contains “elflover95”, it’s time for an update. Keep it professional.

Irrelevant job history

You don’t need to mention your first job wrapping presents in 1998 – focus on what supports your application.

Buzzword overload

“Hardworking team player with excellent communication skills” can feel like Christmas tinsel – overused. Show the skills through examples instead.

Gaps with no explanation

Career breaks are absolutely fine – just give a short, honest note so employers aren’t left guessing.

Including a photo (unless required)

Save the Christmas jumper selfie for social media – not your CV.
